If you were to grade the transfer efforts of Roberto Martinez during his inaugural window at Everton, you’d probably give the Spaniard a glowing A+. Loan signings Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Gareth Barry have all had the desired effect, while former Wigan boys Joel Robels, James McCarthy and Antolin Alcaraz have also proved to be useful additions to the Toffees squad.
But as any Premier League manager will tell you, the January window is an incredibly different mistress, one that will try to tempt you with ridiculously overpriced mediocre footballers and constantly tease with the promise of star signings that will inevitably never arrive.
